Introduction to Photogrammetry

Photogrammetry Workshop Outline (10 Hours)


This workshop will introduce participants to the exciting world of photogrammetry, the process of creating 3D models from photographs. The workshop will cover the theoretical foundations, practical techniques for capturing high-quality images, and processing them into 3D models using software.

Target Audience: This workshop is designed for beginners with no prior experience in photogrammetry. Basic photography skills are helpful but not mandatory.

Workshop Structure (10 hours)


  • A mix of lectures, demonstrations, hands-on exercises, and group discussions.
  • Focus on clear explanations, practical applications, and troubleshooting common challenges.
  • Software used will be chosen based on ease of use and suitability for beginners (e.g., Meshroom, 3D Flow Zephr, Agisoft Metashape PIX 4D)

Day 1.

  • Introduction to Photogrammetry (1 hour):
    • Definition, history, and applications of photogrammetry in various fields (e.g.,  surveying, gaming, archaeology, VFX)
    • Benefits and limitations of photogrammetry compared to other 3D modeling techniques
  • The Photogrammetry Workflow (1.5 hours):
    • Breakdown of the steps involved: capturing images, processing data, generating 3D model, texturing & optimisation
    • Discussion of factors affecting model quality (camera settings, lighting, image overlap)
  • Photography for Photogrammetry (1.5 hours):
    • Choosing the right camera and equipment (DSLR, mirrorless, smartphone considerations)
    • Camera settings for photogrammetry (aperture, shutter speed, ISO)
    • Capturing Techniques: image overlap, lighting conditions, avoiding common pitfalls
  • Hands-on Exercise 1: Capturing Images (1 hour):
    • Participants practice photographing a sample object following best practices.

Day 2.

  • Software Introduction & Processing Workflow (2 hours):
    • Introduction to chosen photogrammetry software interface and basic functionalities.
    • Importing and organizing captured images
    • Processing steps: alignment, reconstruction, mesh generation
  • Hands-on Exercise 2: Processing Photos & Generating a 3D Model (2 hours):
    • Participants process their captured images from Day 1 using the software.
    • Troubleshooting common issues encountered during processing.
  • Mesh Optimisation & Texturing (1 hour):
    • Introduction to basic mesh editing tools (cleaning, retopology) for improving model quality.
    • Applying textures to the 3D model for realistic visuals (optional, time permitting)
  • Exporting & Sharing Your Model (1 hour):
    • Discussing different file formats for 3D models and their uses.
    • Exporting the final model to various formats for further use (e.g., 3D printing, game engines)
  • Wrap-Up & Q&A (30 min):
    • Open forum for questions and discussions
    • Sharing resources and next steps for further exploration of photogrammetry
