Building the Complete Virtual Museum: Spatial Mapping, Radiance Fields & Digital Curation

Format: 2 Days (4 Hours per Day / 8 Hours Total)


Scope: Interior & Outdoor Mapping, 360 Gaussian Splatting, Multi-Layer Security & Accessibility, Artefact Photogrammetry, Curation & Open Standards


Course Overview


A modern virtual museum is not just a photographic panorama; it is a multi-layered digital institution. It demands millimetre-accurate artefact digitisation, continuous indoor/outdoor spatial navigation, radiance-field rendering via Gaussian Splatting, robust digital asset management (DAM), and operational layers that serve public accessibility, facilities management, and emergency response.


This eight-hour workshop walks through the entire architecture: capturing complex galleries and immovable outdoor monuments, training 3D Gaussian Splats from 360 and drone paths, integrating interactive exhibits, and deploying accessible, enterprise-grade virtual environments using open standards.


Day 1: Reality Capture, Radiance Fields & Spatial Frameworks

(4 Hours)


Module 1: Spatial Capture Architecture — Indoor Galleries to Outdoor Sites (60 min)


  • Hybrid Capture Planning: Combining terrestrial 360 walk-paths, high-resolution DSLR/mirrorless photogrammetry grids, and drone photogrammetry for exterior grounds, facades, and large courtyard monuments.


  • Immovable Heritage & Macro Structures: Strategies for capturing massive assets too large for a turntable studio (monumental sculptures, industrial machinery, historic ruins) under shifting daylight.


  • Indoor-to-Outdoor Spatial Transitions: Establishing unified coordinate control across building thresholds, courtyards, and interior gallery halls using ground control markers and scale bars.


Module 2: 360 Video & Panoramic Gaussian Splatting (60 min)


  • From Spherical Frames to Splats: Extracting dense camera poses from equirectangular 360 video and static HDR panoramas using COLMAP and continuous pose solvers.


  • Training Interior Radiance Fields: Reconstructing complex volumetric gallery spaces, realistic specular reflections, and intricate architectural detail without polygon limits.


  • Dataset Pruning & Splat Clean-up: Stripping floaters, isolating pedestrian traffic, and balancing splat file sizes for real-time web streaming.

Module 3: Dual-Track Object Capture: Photogrammetry vs. Splats (60 min)


  • High-Precision Photogrammetry for Measurable Artefacts: Cross-polarised lighting, turntable rigging, diffuse albedo extraction, and mesh baking for geometric metrology and archival CAD records.


  • Gaussian Splatting for Complex Optical Assets: When to use 3DGS over photogrammetry (translucent glass, intricate filigree, reflective bronze, and delicate fabric textures).


  • Mesh & Splat Co-Registration: Aligning high-density object assets precisely onto indoor spatial coordinates and gallery pedestals.


Module 4: Spatial Geometry, Slicing & Wayfinding Engines (45 min)


  • Point Cloud Extraction & Slicing: Processing reality data in CloudCompare and extracting accurate floor plans and section cuts in Rhino.


  • Indoor Wayfinding Setup: Vectorising CAD plans into Mappedin, establishing walkable navigation meshes, defining vertical zones (elevators, stairs), and setting spatial beacons.


Day 2: Curation, Multi-Layer Security, Accessibility & Deployment

(4 Hours)


Module 5: Curation, Metadata & Digital Asset Management (DAM) (50 min)


  • Museum Metadata Taxonomies: Implementing Dublin Core, CIDOC-CRM, and Spectrum museum standards for digital cultural objects.


  • Asset Linking: Attaching high-resolution audio narration, condition reports, curatorial essays, and external archive URLs directly to spatial coordinates and 3D objects.


  • Version Control & Archival Preservation: Managing 32-bit linear master files, raw DNGs, calibrated camera networks, and compressed web-delivery models.


Module 6: Operational Layers: Security, Public Safety & Disability Access (50 min


  • Access Control & Multi-Tier Views: Designing permission-based layers (public visitor tour vs. confidential facilities and security operations).


  • Security & Emergency Management: Embedding CCTV line-of-sight views, fire suppression locations, emergency evacuation routes, and high-value asset telemetry into the spatial twin.


  • Inclusive Design & Accessibility Standards: Building WCAG-compliant virtual interfaces:
    • Screen-reader-friendly asset descriptions and spatial wayfinding.
    • Dedicated step-free / wheelchair-accessible virtual routing.
    • Contrast control, audio descriptions, and keyboard-only spatial navigation.

Module 7: Open Standards, Web Hosting & Collaboration (45 min)


  • Platform-Agnostic 3D Web Delivery: Hosting dense 3D meshes and large CAD models in Nira and streaming web-optimised Gaussian Splats (SPZ/PLY via web viewers).


  • Open Standard Interoperability: Structuring asset pipelines with OpenUSD, glTF/GLB, and MapLibre for cross-platform sustainability without vendor lock-in.


  • Collaborative Curatorial Spaces: Multi-user virtual walk-throughs for exhibition planning, conservation audits, and stakeholder reviews.


Module 8: Capstone Build: The Virtual Museum & Case Study Review (75 min)


  • Hands-on Integration: Participants assemble a complete multi-gallery museum project featuring:
    1. 360 Gaussian Splat interior walkthrough paths.
    2. Integrated outdoor monument captured via aerial/ground imagery.
    3. Interactive 3D artefact models anchored on gallery plinths.
    4. Public curatorial pop-ups, accessible wayfinding routes, and a restricted facilities/security overlay.


  • Field Failure Case Studies: Analysing real-world mistakes (moving visitor crowds, direct sunlight glare on display vitrines, scale mismatch between air and ground datasets) and building recovery SOPs.
