Three-Day Heritage Photogrammetry and Inspection Photography Workshop: York & North Yorkshire
Including York, York Minster, Fountains Abbey, Byland Abbey and National Railway Museum
Barry, the course presenter has over 40 years of photogrammetry and heritage 3D modelling documentation experience and is coincidentally, a Blue Badge Yorkshire Guide. Passionate about the ecclesiastical and industrial heritage.
Day 1: Sunday York's Heritage (York City Centre)
- Morning (9:00 AM - 1:00 PM):
- Meet & greet at a central York location.
- Introduction to heritage photography: historical context, capturing architectural deta
- Locations: York Minster, St Mary's Abbey, The Shambles, and some of York’s hidden gems, and Snickleways and photo ops.
- Technical session: camera settings for heritage photography (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), using filters (polarising, ND).
- Lunch break (included) at a traditional York pub.
- Afternoon (2:00 PM - 5:00 PM):
- More of York's hidden heritage
- Basic post-processing techniques in Lightroom/Photoshop ( Early evening session at hotel).
Evening Entertainment. Pub tour of York and night photography… mmmm. Partners Welcome
Day 2: Monday Exploring North Yorkshire's Heritage (Fountains Abbey, Ripon Cathedral & Byland Abbey with lunch at Theakston Brewery, Masham.)
- Morning (8:30 AM - 12:30 PM):
- Workshop on 32bit Photogrammetry
- Capturing the gardens and the amazing Unesco World Heritage Site and grounds of Fountains Abbey (weather permitting).
- Lunch break (included) at Theakston Brewery Masham
- Afternoon (2:00 PM - 5:00 PM):
- Travel to Ripon Cathedral and onwards via Boroughbridge to Byland Abbey
- Workshop on photographing historic properties, managing light and reflections, capturing details on weathered facades and flooring.
Evening. Point Cloud Colorisation Master Class with Riegl and RichPix.
Day 3: Tuesday Inspection Photography Techniques (York City Center)
- Morning (9:00 AM - 1:00 PM): York Minster
- Introduction to inspection photography and using 360 imagery : understanding different types of inspections (building, property), legal requirements for documentation.
- Equipment considerations: specialised lenses), lighting for low-light situations.
- Techniques for capturing detailed images of defects, cracks, and wear & tear.
- Hands-on practice session: photographing mock inspection scenarios in a training space.
- Techniques for using photography in 3D modelling for Masonry and Stained glass conservation
Lunch and Photo reviews at York Pub.
- Afternoon (2:00 PM - 4:00 PM):
- National Railway Museum
- Review and discussion of participant's inspection photographs.
- Post-processing techniques for inspection photography: clarity, highlighting specific details.
- Software basics for organising and reporting inspection images.
- Course wrap-up, Q&A, and feedback.
Additional Notes:
- Accommodation is not out included but York has huge variety of accommodation to suit every budget.
- Spouses and partners are more than welcome to join for all evening events
- Transportation between locations will be provided (minibus).
- Entrance fees to all venues are included.
- Breakfast is not included, but recommendations for nearby cafes will be provided.
- Dinners are not included, allowing for exploration of York's diverse restaurants. And pubs…
- A basic understanding of camera operation is recommended.
- Tripods and filters are recommended but not mandatory.

This itinerary provides a framework for the workshop. Adjustments can be made based on weather conditions, specific interests within heritage photography, and the availability of locations.
