Archaeological Site Photography: Mastering Documentation and Visual Storytelling

Course Description: This comprehensive course is designed to equip archaeologists and heritage professionals with the specialized skills and knowledge to master site photography for archaeological documentation and research, with a particular emphasis on industrial and archaeological heritage sites. Participants will delve deep into the techniques and considerations specific to capturing the essence of these unique sites, from excavation units and stratigraphic profiles to industrial structures, machinery, and surrounding landscapes. The course will focus on optimizing camera operation, composition, lighting, and post-processing techniques to create accurate, informative, and visually compelling documentation of archaeological and industrial heritage sites.


Course Objectives:

  • Understand the fundamentals of photography and their application in archaeological and industrial heritage site documentation.
  • Develop proficiency in camera operation, composition, and lighting techniques tailored to these unique sites.

Course Structure:

Module 1: Fundamentals of Site Photography

  • Introduction to cameras, lenses, and equipment suitable for archaeological and industrial site photography.
  • Exposure, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO for varying outdoor and indoor lighting conditions.
  • Composition and framing techniques to highlight historical significance, spatial relationships, and industrial processes.
  • Natural and artificial lighting techniques for capturing the scale, context, and unique features of archaeological and industrial heritage sites.
  • Basic photo editing software and workflow for archaeological and industrial heritage photography.


Module 2: Documenting Excavation Units, Stratigraphic Profiles, and Industrial Structures

  • Lighting techniques for photographing excavation units, industrial interiors, and machinery.
  • Capturing detailed images of stratigraphic profiles, architectural details, and industrial processes with proper scale and orientation.
  • Using scales, north arrows, and color charts for accurate representation.
